Creation of the World

The creation myth of the Kingdom of Hyrule states that before time began, the universe was one of reasonless chaos, where no spirits or life existed. Into this churning possibility descended three Golden Goddesses: Din, Goddess of Power, Nayru, Goddess of Wisdom, and Farore, Goddess of Courage. Din crafted the world with her strong arms, creating the shape of the land and sea. Farore breathed life into the world, and from her all forms of life sprang into being. Nayru bestowed knowledge onto the world, so that the beings there may know understanding and law.

With their labors completed, the Goddesses departed for points unknown, but left behind a shining symbol of their unity: an omnipotent relic known as the Triforce, said to grant the deepest desires of any mortal that acquires it, but only if one’s own elements of Power, Wisdom and Courage were in harmony; if not, the Triforce would divide in three, each piece going to the one most powerful in that aspect.

Why the Goddesses left the world or why forces of evil game into being is never touched upon in the legend, and is debated by scholars to this day. While this is the most widely-accepted story of the world’s creation, there are variations and even inherent differences depending on the race: the Goron folk say they are Din’s chosen race, being carved from the stones of the first mountains she created; while the Zora tell that Three Divine Sisters caught a sacred fish in their net, and were so taken by it that they chose to let it back into the primordial waters with a spark of divinity in it – this fish would eventually spawn the life of the world, and the Zora’s patron deity is a physical manifestation of that fish reborn. The Gerudo people renounce the claim of the Goddesses dominion, telling of how a fourth Goddess was cast down by her jealous sisters for her ingenuity and cleverness, and became the Goddess of the Sands. A rare few claim the old gods do not exist at all, citing the lack of attention and apparent chaos as signs that no caring divine power could truly exist. However, there is overwhelming evidence against these views, as the incredible power left over by the Goddesses has surfaced in various form through the history of the world, particularly in the mysterious Triforce.
